So here's the story as I know it. One day when Mom was at the Ricks College Library, a handsome young man came sauntering into the room. Actually he was crazy shy and Mom would always talk about how his neck got really red while she was talking to him. Later when they were both at a dance he asked her to dance and after that they started dating. All the girls wanted to date Dad, but he was interested in Mom and couldn't see any other girls. Then one day Mom went over to Dad's apartment which he shared with I think six other guys (maybe it was seven). She was just sitting in the front room with another of Dad's roommates when he arrived. Without even saying hello he went into his room. Confused Mom kept talking to Dad's roommate and gave Dad his space. While in his room one of Dad's roommates started to sneakily put it into Dad's head that Mom was starting to show more of an interest in the roommate sitting out in the front room. Dad just shrugged it off at first, but his roommate kept taunting him until Dad started to believe him, and soon he was angry and went out into the front room. Scared by his obvious anger, the roommate left my Dad and Mom in the room alone together. But Dad wouldn't say anything. Confused Mom went home and in a couple of days Dad took Mom on a drive. Mom was nervous and trying to prepare herself for rejection. But then he surprised her when he asked her to be his eternal companion. She said yes and after a summer break apart, they got married. I think it's the strangest love story ever, but they were in love.
Alright, so I left a lot of details to this story out, but that's only so that others can put them in. So put them in!
ok so here's some other random things I know about mom and dad's courtship. first dad doesn't remember meeting mom in the library. mom always said he was so nervous and that's why he forgot it. second the day he proposed he didn't talk to her at all and it was the sunday of conference and that's why mom thought he was breaking up with him. and yes i think theirs is the strangest courtship ever! but hey it worked out otherwise none of us would be here. i only hope to be as happily married as they were and are.
ReplyDeleteDad here...
ReplyDeleteWell at least you got the title right. "It was Love". Actually you have most of the story right too, although there is a lot more to it. It was a long time ago but here are some of the details to this part of the story of our courtship as I remember.
Michelle was studying with Kirk Brower, an old high school buddy of mine, when we first met in the Ricks College library. I recognized her at the dance a few days later but couldn't remember where we had met. It was enough to give me the courage to ask her to dance, and as they say the rest is history. Michelle remembered everything about the library, the dance, and everything thereafter.
My roommates were a great bunch of guys most of the time. They recognized that Michelle and I were meant for each other long before I did (I think Michelle might have known it right from the beginning). Steve and Jeff had been missionary companions together in New York and were the ultimate pranksters. They had it figured out; Steve would talk to me in our bedroom while Jeff flirted with Michelle in the next room. I fell for it and it worked perfectly, almost too perfectly. By the time I came out of the bedroom I was feeling a little jealousy and a lot angry. Jeff could tell immediately so he high tailed it out of there. We had a good laugh about it the next day, but at that moment I was ready to kill him. Michelle had no idea what just happened so she left for her apartment. Later that night I realized I had fallen "head over heels" for this girl. Michelle and I had a good talk the next day, but it took me another month or two to find the wherewithal to ask her to marry me. The day I did finally get up the nerve to ask her was general conference Sunday. The FHE group went out to my roommate Daris' parents' house to watch conference. Michelle was always an "unofficial" member of our FHE group. I knew I was going to ask her that night, but I wasn't sure she would say yes. I was a nervous wreck. I know I didn't get anything out of those four hours of conference. Nobody talked during the four hours we were watching conference and I probably didn't say much during the two hours between sessions. Michelle interpreted it as "we're going to break up". It was really a case of extreme anxiety. That evening we did go for a drive, I did finally "pop the question", and Michelle said YES!
